One of the programs worth checking out at Comic Con 2010 is the Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards on Friday, July 23rd from 8:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. at the San Diego Bayfront Hilton in the Indigo Ballroom. The doors for attendees will open at 8:15 p.m. It will be general seating, so it's a very good idea to get there early if you want an excellent seat. Comic-Con attendees need only their badges to get into the event. This is the comics industry equivalent to the Oscars. It will be a gala ceremony with the biggest names in comic book, graphic novel and popular arts in various formats such as deluxe hardcovers, online stories and the traditional comic book. All attendees will receive a free Will Eisner graphic novel. The Eisner Awards honor the creators and publishers of the comics and other popular arts such as the graphic novel. Will Eisner is an acclaimed comics creator and the "father" of the graphic novel. His book A Contract with God published in 1978 is what helped popularize the graphic novel genre. There will be awards given in 29 of the Esiner categories ranging from Best Publication for Kids to Best Comics-Related Book to Best Cover Artist. Besides the standard categories there will be additional special awards such as the Bill Finger Award for Achievement in Comic Book Writing and the Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award as well as some others. There will certainly be an abundance of celebrities participating in the 22nd Annual Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards. The master of ceremonies of this event will be Bongo Comics Bill Morrison and voice actor from Pinky and the Brain & Futurama, Maurice LaMatche. The awards theme this year is "Comics Fiesta", which it surely will be all night long. Kicking off the ceremonies will be the cast from Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World. This film opens in theaters on August 13th. It is based on the graphic novel series by cartoonist Bryan Lee O'Malley. His Volume 5 in this series is nominated for an Eisner. The cast members include Michael Cera, Aubrey Plaza, Anna Kendrick and many others who will present in three categories. In closing, other celebrity presenters will be writer/actor of Reno 911 & Balls of Fury, Ben Garant, voice actor/comedian from MadTV & Family Guy, Phil LaMarr, and actor/comics creator of The Punisher Thomas Jane. Nominees and Comic-Con special guests will also present such as: C. Tyler, James Robinson, Peter Bagge, Milo Manara and James Sturm. DC Comics received the most nominations for a publisher with a total of 20. Creators with the most nominations are Japanese manga master Naoki Urasawa with 5 and David Mazzucchelli with 4 for his literary graphic novel, Asterios Polyp.
